The advantage to going the commercial publishing route is if you have been successful enough in having your manuscript accepted and it is good enough for the mainstream market – then the marketing and sales are all handled by the big commercial publishers. The disadvantage – it really is the lucky few that this happens to. My advice to this would be to start by looking at establishing yourself as an author in your own home town. This is where you will gain credibility and a following as a published author. Many great authors started off as self-published authors. It is tough enough trying to make it in the local market. So the advantages you have are the control of how your book is developed, you own the copyright and you have the guarentee of getting your book published and read. Even the marketing and sales and earning potential are in your hands, so the opportunities are there.
